Beautiful place. Rock beach (big rocks) so come here just to snorkel, then head down the road to a sandy beach for general hanging. No sunscreen allowed (save the marine environment!). Snorkeling is only good when it's calm, so watch the weather. If the walking trail is super muddy, snorkeling probs won't be good. Any waves or brown water and it's no good for snorkeling. Definitely more people than there used to be around. The trail to the coast is nice.
Beautiful snorkeling here. Calm water protected from the winds on 3 sides. Getting in the water is tricky since the beach is all rock...not sharp rocks. Fish are also a little more "friendly" here as it's a no fishing zone. Overall a good safe place to bring the kids to relax or snorkel.
The presence of a large number of wild chickens is nice in the beginning but if you stay longer you will be surprise to realize how annoying can be these birds.
We had two round of snorkeling with a total of 3-3.5 hours in water. On my snorkeling marking scale the score for Honolua Bay was for sure 5 from a maximum of 5 point.
The water was crystal clear and we had a day with calm sea. From the very beginning on the right side of the bay we encountered a great quantity and diversity of fish.
In the first part of August 2017 the clearest water was almost daily in the north-west part of Maui. Consequently our snorkeling in Honolua Bay was the greatest experience from our vacation.
Beautiful ace to go snorkeling. The entry/cit can be a little rough as there is no beach - just large rocks. There's about a quarter mile walk through a rain forest from the parking area to the water. There are porta-potties in the parking area.
Unfortunately the lack of facilities for the tourists makes a longer stay difficult mainly for the ones that are not involved in snorkeling activities. In my opinion this beach is very good only for snorkeling because it is difficult enough to find a more even place for placing your beach chair.
The number of parking places is far less than the number of tourist wishing to visit Honolua Bay. The vegetation along the path leading to the rocky beach is impressive. Impressive is also the lack of ecological toilets and garbage trashes.
Great snorkeling. Need to get away from the beach for the best snorkeling. Rocky shore is very slippery and not suitable for young kids.
When we reach also the central reef the underwater landscape was also magnificent. On this mid bay reef we encountered also one of the biggest turtles that we saw in Maui.
The entering into water is difficult due to the lack of sand and the concrete slope that exists in the middle of the beach is very deteriorated.
